Zusammenfassung:Experiments on the effects of sub-lethal concentrations of nickel on the cyanobacterium Nostoc muscorum showed that the metal significantly inhibited photo-autotrophic growth at a concentration of 15 um. Nickel also inhibited uptake of phosphate by the cells, the degree of inhibition being dependent on metal concentration; there was evidence of a non-competitive type of interaction between nickel and phosphate. At all but the lowest concentration tested (1 um), nickel inhibited the activity of the alkaline phosphatase enzyme, but stimulated the activities of both magnesium-dependent and calcium-dependent ATPases.
