Zusammenfassung:A study has been conducted to investigate the use of the empirical single-parameter solvatochromic polarity scale E{sub T}(30) for estimating the activity of alumina surfaces. The surface polarity of {chi}-type alumina was determined as a function of the thermal activation and water deactivation of the material. Activation temperatures ranged from 100 to 600{degree}C, and deactivation was performed with 0-15% by weight water. The results of this work imply that a solvatochromic polarity scale could be a useful means of estimating the activity of metal oxide substances employed for large-scale separations and catalysis.
