Zusammenfassung: | Lead is one of the toxic heavy metals that pose water pollution problems; lead is known to accumulate in fish tissues and may negatively affect fish reproduction. Seasonal breeder fresh water fish, Anabas testudineus, were collected from a lake in India and tested in a laboratory setting. They were exposed to various concentrations of lead nitrate and their spawning potential was measured using ovarian oocyte size frequency analyses. Ovary weight and length and lead levels in brain tissues were also measured. Lead exposure was found to decrease the number of ova. The changes in reproductive potential are attributable to either altered levels of corticosteroids or changes in pituitary mediated activity. |
