Zusammenfassung:	Tetrachlorobenzyltoluenes (TCBT) are used to replace PCB as hydraulic fluids in underground mining in West Germany. In May 1987 and 1988 yellow eel (Anguilla anguilla) from the Roer, Meuse, Rhine and Niers rivers in the Netherlands were analysed for TCBT using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The Roer river had the highest levels (1.1 and 4.8 mg per kg fillet in 1987 and 1988, respectively). There was a corresponding reduction in PCB in the river. International adoption of a ban on the use of TCBT was recommended.
