Zusammenfassung:	Observations with the AMPTE/CCE spacecraft in the near-earth nightside magnetosphere show a significant enhancement of ionospheric particle presence, mainly O(+), at the beginning of the substorm growth phase. Such an enhancement indicates not only an ionospheric participation in the substorm initiation, but also an active role in the substorm growth phase.
