A follow-up study of lead absorption in cows as an indicator of environmental lead pollution

Lead absorption in cows grazing in the vicinity of a lead smelter and in a control area was documented in 1976, 1982, 1984, and 1988. High blood Pb levels and erythrocyte protoporphyrin were found in animals exposed to smelter emissions prior to the installation of a flue-gas cleaning system in 1978...

Zusammenfassung:Lead absorption in cows grazing in the vicinity of a lead smelter and in a control area was documented in 1976, 1982, 1984, and 1988. High blood Pb levels and erythrocyte protoporphyrin were found in animals exposed to smelter emissions prior to the installation of a flue-gas cleaning system in 1978; depressed erythrocyte amino-levulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) levels were also noted. The highly significant difference in blood Pb and ALAD between control and exposed cows was evident 10 yr after the introduction of emission controls, indicating that the process of normalization in cows is slow.
