Laser spectroscopy of hydrogenlike nitrogen in an electron beam ion trap

Using a {sup 14}C{sup 16}O{sub 2} laser the 2s{sub 1/2}-2p{sub 3/2} (fine structure-Lamb shift) transition has been induced in {sup 14}N{sup 6+} ions trapped in an electron beam ion trap. The transition has been measured to be 835.0{+-}0.5 cm{sup -1}, in agreement with QED theory.
