Zusammenfassung:Purpose This paper investigates the institutional aspects to identify competitive advantage of the automotive industry in the ASEAN market based on the comparative analysis of FTA signed by Korea and Japan with countries in the ASEAN region, and to draw up policy suggestions. Design/Methodology/Approach HS Code for motor vehicles and auto parts was selected, and the Restrictiveness Index (RI) was used to determine the restrictiveness the country of origin criteria for each FTA. This paper also looked at differences in preferential tax rates by country. Further, policy suggestions and implications were derived by conducting in-depth interviews with 4-wheel car maker and automotive parts suppliers in ASEAN to understand the results of this study and the perspectives at the industrial sites due to differences in preferential tax rates. Findings This study found that Japan has more advantageous agreement than Korea in terms of restrictiveness and preferential tariff rate. Besides, in-depth interviews also provided various results regarding how to reduce the current obstacles. Research Implications First, individual FTA with ASEAN countries needs to be expanded. Second, easing restrictiveness of determining the origin, expanding the difference between applied duty rate and preferential tariff rate, adding or easing conditions for cumulation, expanding De Minimis need to be considered. Third, Government and private-level ODA need to be actively implemented to target the ASEAN market. KCI Citation Count: 0
