Zusammenfassung: | The objective of this study is to develop the base paper for the preservation of records. To enhance the preservation characteristics, Dak fibers instead of wood pulp were used to produce the base paper.
To make machine-made Hanji paper produced from Dak fibers sustainable for long-term storage of records, the pretreatment conditions on the pulp fibers and additive requirements were examined. To evaluate the preservation properties, several Hanji substrates were prepared by designing various experiments and their physical, optical and mechanical properties were compared with those of the commercial products.
The machine-made Hanji paper prepared by the design of experiments was in compliance with the specifications of KS M ISO 11108 and met the storage and durability requirements for preserving documents. The Hanji substrate cured at 120°C under an accelerated dry heat aging environment showed significant changes in its physical properties. However, the Hanji substrate cured at 80°C and 65% RH under an accelerated wet and heat aging environment, showed least changes in physical properties, which were comparable with the commercial substrates.
It is concluded that the machine-made Hanji paper produced from Dak fibers can be adequately used in preserving documents for long-term storage. However, it is necessary to produce a high based weight substrate to preserve covers and folders. To accomplish this, preparing either one-ply composite or a multiple-ply substrate (2-ply or 3-ply) should be considered. KCI Citation Count: 0 |
