Zusammenfassung: | This paper aims to explore how ekphrasis is employed in Shakespeare’s plays. As recent critics have defined, ekphrasis is a verbal representation of visual representation. Shakespearean ekphrasis means linguistic capacity or possibility to make the audience see. First, The Taming of the Shrew and Antony and Cleopatra suggest Shakespeare’s interest in pictorial art, emphasizing the vividness and seductiveness of his description. Second, Henry V and Pericles represent many absent and important events through Chorus’s ekphrasis and ask the audience to create images with the mind’s eye and imagination. Finally, Othello and The Tempest explore an ideal relationship between verbal and visual representations, or between narrative and drama. Eventually, Shakespearean ekphrasis highlights not only the fascination with the visualization of language, but also the interplay between different forms of representation, blurring the distinction between representation and reality.
