Zusammenfassung: | Evaluates arguments that China's rapid economic development poses a threat to the US and other Western societies. The strength of the US and Chinese economies is compared using 2007 statistical data; China's military expenditures and "soft power" (educational and cultural development) are also analyzed. Common interests between the US and China and the determination of the Chinese government to a "peaceful rise" to status as an international power are identified as barriers to China becoming a significant threat. It is concluded that China's threat potential will be determined not by its economic strength but by its political system. Adapted from the source document. |
