To evaluate the usefulness of ginseng above-ground part extract as a raw material for skin wrinkle improvement cosmetics, ginsenoside content was analyzed in the above-ground part and the under-ground part of ginseng grown for 5 years. Ginseng was collected in July, August, and September, when the above-ground part of ginseng was formed, divided into above-ground part and the under-ground part, and the ginsenoside content in each part was quantitatively analyzed. As a result, the monthly content of ginsenoside Rd in the above-ground part of ginseng was the highest among protopanaxadiol ginsenosides Rb1, Rc, Rb2, and Rd. The average content of ginsenoside Rd in the above-ground part of ginseng for 3 months was 6.0 mg/g, which was significantly higher than that of ginsenoside Rb1: 0.3 mg/g, Rc: 2.5 mg/g, and Rb2: 1.6 mg/g. The average content of ginsenoside Rd in the above-ground part of ginseng was found to be about 1.5 times higher than that in the under-ground part. DPPH radical scavenging activity, an indicator of antioxidant activity, was found to be higher in extracts from above-ground part of ginseng than the under-ground part, but the inhibitory effect on elastinase activity, an indicator of wrinkle improvement efficacy, was confirmed to be similar between the above-ground part and the under-ground part of ginseng. These results show that the extract of the above-ground part of ginseng containing various ginsenosides, including ginsenoside Rd, is valuable as a raw material for wrinkle-improving cosmetics, just like the extract of rhizome of ginseng that is currently used as a raw material for cosmetics.
