Zusammenfassung:Wood pulp properties are important controlling parameters to produce cellulose derivatives because they could affect the chemical accessibility and reactivity. This study investigated the effect of wood pulp properties on the carboxymethylation of pulp cellulose using various cooking techniques and species-appropriates fractionations. The efficiency of carboxymethylation was improved with the increase in the alpha-cellulose of pulp because lignin and hemicellulose, which adversely affect derivatization, were removed. In the case of hardwood, the removal of the fines comprising vessel elements had a positive effect on the carboxymethylation. In the case of softwood, the narrow variance of fiber length and width by fractionation was positive in improving the efficiency of carboxymethylation. The highest carboxyl content was 2.02 mmole/g when 12 g of monochloroacetic acid is added. Therefore, it is important to control pulp fiber characteristics to achieve the desired quality of carboxymethyl cellulose. KCI Citation Count: 0
