A hybrid gadfly petrel suggests that soft-plumaged petrels (Pterodroma mollis) had colonised the Antipodes Islands by the 1920s

Zusammenfassung: | Provides a morphological and mitochondrial DNA analysis of a unique Pterodroma petrel shot at sea near the Antipodes Islands in 1926, the features of which are intermediate between white-headed petrel (Pterodroma lessonii) and soft-plumaged petrel (Pt. mollis). Discusses the implications of the hybridisation detected in terms of the likely colonisation of the Islands by soft-plumaged petrels, and some pairing with the locally abundant cogeneric white-headed petrel, by the 1920s.
