Condition of vegetation at Mt Bruce State Forest Reserve and adjoining areas

Content Partner: Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research. The forest is dominated by rimu and rata, with some red beech in the north and maire in the south. Miro, totara, hinau, rewarewa and kamahi are common. Past fire has caused areas of secondary growth, and fenced areas used for grazing cattle are evident in both the forest and educational reserve. Bracken is evident and considered undesirable because of loss of grazing, but prevents excess runoff and erosion.
