Zusammenfassung: | Introduction: Several studies have noted the complex relation between the age at
menarche and body shape. In this research, the relationship between the amount of fat
and its body distribution with the age at menarche in a sample of university women
was analysed.
Material and Methods: 541 university women of the University of the Basque
Country, aged 18.3 to 29.7 years were analysed (mean age 21.4 years; SD ± 2.5). The
fatness level was estimated through BMI (kg/m2) and the percentage of fat (Siri,
1961). The subcutaneous fat distribution patterns were obtained with through a
Principal Components Analysis (PCA). The mean age at menarche was computed
through the retrospective method and 3 groups of maturation were considered (mean ±
SD): early (14.2 years).
The comparison between groups was performed with an ANOVA test.
Results: the results indicate a smaller body size, a higher weight and higher
levels of adiposity in early maturers, but differences between the three maturation
groups were not significant.
Conclusion: an association between the age at menarche and adiposity was not
found, and there is not a clear relation between having been an early maturer and the
fat of having nowadays a high body fat percentage, a high weight for height and/or a
given fat distribution pattern.
