Zusammenfassung:The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of repeated intracamer-al injections of 1% lidocaine that was known to exhibit no toxicity to corneal endothelium in low concentration. Twenty-one eyes of 21 Newzeal Land white rabbits were randomly divided into 3 groups and 0.1 ml of 1% lidocaine was injected intracamerally once(group A, 7 eyes), twice(group B, 7 eyes) or three times(group C,7 eyes). Injection was repeated 5 minutes after previous injection. In each injection, 0.1 ml of 1% lidocaine was injected into anterior chamber after aspiration of 0.1 ml of aqueous humor with 30-gauge needle. Central corneal endothelial cell count and central corneal thickness were measured with specular microscope before and 1 hour, 1 day and 3 days after injection. One eye of each group was enucleated 1 hour, 1 day and 3 days after injection, cut off with 7.5 mm trephine and stained with Alizarin red S. As the number of injection increased, decrease of corneal endothelial cell counts was observed. There were no statistically significant differences of corneal endothelial cell count between group A(one injection) and group B(twice injections). But, we could observe statistically significant differences of corneal endothelial cell count between group A and group C(three times injections). Corneal thickness showed a tendency of increase as the number of injection increased but, there were no statistically significant differences. Polymegathism and pleomorphism increased as the number of injection increased. In this study, it was found that repeated intracameral injections of 1% lidocaine more than three time induced rabbit's corneal endothelial damage significantly and that means repeated intracameral injections at cataract surgery might injure human corneal endothelium(J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 41:2645~2651, 2000).
