Zusammenfassung: | Background and Methods: This is a review and clinical analysis of 209 patients with massive burns (over 70% of total body surface) who were treated in the Department of Surgery during 3 years from 1997 to 1999. This retrospective analysis was carried out to characterize the population and to identify the factors (age, extent of burn, cause, etc.) that affected the mortality rate. Results: The incidence was higher in the group of male patients from 21 to 50 years old who took active parts in society. Also, flame burns accounted for the majority (88.5%) of burns. The total mortality rate was 70.8%, but the rate in patients with 70~79% burned body surface was 49.1%. Conclusion: These results were significantly lower than those in other reports. In our hospital, there is a specialized burn center which consists of burn surgeons, wound therapists, burn ICU , and burn ward. Especially, the number of wound therapist is increasing gradually. Wound therapists in 1996 were 7; in 1997 their number increased to 10 and finally to 15 in 2000. In a previous report on our burn center, the mortality in the patients with over 70% burned body surface was about 93%(1), higher than this report. This means that the role of the specialized burn center with burn surgeon, wound therapists, intensive care units, etc. is being emphasized. |
