Exposure to ozone causes symptoms, impairment of lung function and airway inflammation, but the predictors of responsiveness remain largely unknown. Few studies have examined the responsiveness to ozone among smokers. Kerr et al. [1] and Frampton et al. [2] found that smokers experienced less lung function changes and fewer symptoms following ozone exposure than nonsmokers. Hazucha et al. [3] reported just the opposite results. Little is known about differences in inflammatory responses to ozone. Moreover the relationship between changes in lung function and airway inflammation has not been clearly established.
