Zusammenfassung:	Less than 1% of ovarian follicles ever mature to ovulation. The remainder undergo atretic degeneration via apoptosis during development. Though the regulation of antral and preovulatory survival has been studied for many years, very little is known about the regulation of survival and development of preantral follicles. This review discusses recent findings regarding preantral follicle development with emphasis on the regulation of preantral follicle apoptosis.
