No One Quotes Leopoldo Yabes Anymore

Delivered in 2002 on the Foundation Day of the College of Arts and Letters, University of the Philippines (UP), the paper honors long-time UP dean Leopoldo Y. Yabes (1912-1986) for his contributions to intellectual history, an undeveloped field in Philippine Studies. In urging more attention to this area of study, the paper points to the largely unacknowledged contributions of Jose Rizal and other nineteenth-century intellectuals to the emergence in the Philippines of such disciplines as anthropology, linguistics, and psychology.
