Zusammenfassung:The loggerhead shrike (Lanius ludovicianus) is a migratory nongame bird of management concern by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and has been on the Blue List of the National Audubon Society since 1972. Confirmed and potential nesting records of loggerhead shrikes have been noted in 20 Pennsylvania counties during the early decades of the 20th century, but it is no longer a regular breeding species in the state. In 1992, the status of this species in Pennsylvania was upgraded to endangered. We conducted a pilot study of loggerhead shrikes in Adams and Franklin Counties, Pennsylvania, from August 1996 through August 1997. Goals of this study were to (1) identify and map potential nesting habitat in the twocounty area, (2) identify potential permanent study sites, (3) inventory potential nesting habitat, and (4) develop site-specific habitat management recommendations. In this paper, we describe briefly our efforts to develop a recovery and management program for the loggerhead shrike from August 1996 through August 1997. In addition, we outline our recommendations for the recovery and management of shrike populations on the Eisenhower National Historic Site (EISE), Adams County, Pennsylvania. Our recommendations recently have been implemented at EISE by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the National Park Service.
