Das Britische Mandat in Palästina: Zur Situation des Bildungswesens

With regard to the educational system in Palestine, the mandatory authorities on the one hand were general heir of the Ottoman state-maintained schools. Concurrently they inherited the segregated Muslim, Jewish and Christian schools which had emerged from the Millet-system. On the other hand they were guided by the concern to establish a central educational administration. In view of the gradually emerging Jewish-Arab conflict in Palestine the segregated education not only correlated with the political development but represented a missed opportunity regarding national integration. The European presence in the Levant entailed a patronage of individual religious minorities and gave rise to the development and propagation of school education in the European pattern for the populations concerned. En ce qui concerne le système éducatif en Palestine, les autorités mandataires ont hérité des écoles d'Etat ottomanes ainsi que des écoles musulmanes, juives et chrétiennes, indépendantes les unes des autres et issues du système Millet. D'autre part, ces mandataires ont eu le souci d'établir en matière d'éducation une administration britannique centrale. En regard du conflit judéo-arabe pour la Palestine, qui commençait à se dessiner, ce système éducatif scindé placé sous contrôle mandataire est non seulement allé de pair avec l'évolution politique conflictuelle, mais a constitué aussi de façon décisive une occasion manquée d'intégration nationale. La présence européenne au Levant a donné lieu à un parrainage des différentes minorités religieuses par les puissances rivales, ce qui s'est répercuté sur le développement et la propagation d'établissements scolaires de modèle européen pour les populations concernées.
