SIGILLUM SANCTI DIONYSII ARCHIEPISCOPI: LA FABRICATION D'UNE LÉGENDE

À partir du milieu du XIe siècle, l'abbaye de Saint-Denis lutta pour affirmer son indépendance à l'égard de l'évêque de Paris. Cet effort s'appuya, entre autres, sur la fabrication de privilèges pontificaux et épiscopaux accordant à l'abbaye l'exemption de l'ordinaire, privilèges qui furent confirmés en 1065 par le roi Philippe Ier et le pape Alexandre II. Avant la fin du siècle, l'évêque commença de chercher à reconquérir ses droits sur le monastère, chacune des deux parties sollicitant l'appui de la papauté. C'est sur cette toile de fond qu'il faut comprendre la création du premier sceau de l'abbaye : représentant saint Denis en archevêque, il défiait directement les revendications de l'autorité episcopale. La présente étude montre que ce sceau fut en usage dès 1114 au plus tard, et analyse les sources de l'image du saint comme celles de la légende. Le sceau est enfin placé dans le contexte plus large des querelles entre abbés et évêques, qui se sont prolongées fort avant dans le XIIe siècle. En annexe figure une liste des actes témoignant de l'usage du sceau abbatial jusqu'à la mort de l'abbé Suger. From the mid-11th century on, the abbey of Saint-Denis attempted to assert its independence from the control of the bishop of Paris. This effort included, among other things, the forging of papal and episcopal privileges that granted the abbey exemption from episcopal control, and these privileges were confirmed by King Philip I and Pope Alexander II in 1065. By the end of the century, the bishop of Paris tried to regain his rights in the monastery, and both sides had recourse to the papacy. It is against this background that should be viewed the creation of the abbey's first seal, where asserting that St. Denis was an archbishop directly challenged episcopal claims over the abbey. This study shows that the seal was used at Saint-Denis at least by 1114, and it describes the sources both for the image of the saint and the legend. It concludes by placing the seal in the context of the quarrel between abbots and bishops that lasted well into the 12th century. An appendix lists all references to the abbey seal up to the death of Abbot Suger. Seit Mitte des 11.
