Zusammenfassung: | One of the first hygienic measures taken in Surinam was against quarantinable diseases. This was done as early as 1763. In 1831 there were very strict laws, even death penalty in case of false statements made by captains and ship's surgeons. Many epidemics of smallpox and yellow fever occurred in Surinam and also one cholera epidemic in Nickerie in 1854. From 1953 the Pan American Sanitary Organization and the United Nations Children's Fund are aiding Surinam in eradicating the urban yellow fever mosquito. In 1954 the Surinam Government adopted the International Sanitary Regulations. |
