GOUDAFZETTINGEN IN SURINAME

A short review is given of the results of an investigation on the genesis and distribution of gold deposits in Suriname, which were laid down in my doctoral thesis on „Goudafzettingen in Suriname (Gold deposits in Surinam, with an English summary)", Leiden 1955. This thesis was promoted by Prof. Dr E. Niggli. From statistical and field evidence, two periods of gold-mineralisation were concluded, which both are connected to the contact zones of granitic rocks. The secondary (placer) deposits are interpreted as a result of mechanical transport mainly. Mentioned in this article is a division of the pneumatolitic processes into hydropneumatolitic and carbopneumatolitic processes which respectively caused the formation of the gold-bearing quartz-veins, lenses and veinlets, of the two different periods of mineralisation. The contact metasomatical alteration of the host rock of certain types of gold deposits are summarised.
