DE L'AMITIÉ ET DES FRÈRES: L'ÉPÎTRE 45 DES "RASĀ'IL IḪWĀN AL-ṢAFĀ'." Présentation et traduction annotée

Cet article présente une traduction annotée de l'Épître 45 des Épîtres des Frères de lapureté (Rasā'i Iḫwān al-Ṣafā') consacrée aux notions d'amitié et de fraternité au fondement même du projet de communauté porté par les Frères de la Pureté. La traduction est précédée d'une introduction qui explore les différents thèmes abordés dans cette épître (description du mağlis des Frères, origine des divers caractères, choix de l'ami, choix du maître et du disciple, conservation de l'ami, entraide mutuelle des Frères), et les resitue dans le cadre des discussions sur l'amitié qui abondent au 10e siècle. La hiérarchie des Frères sur laquelle se termine l'Épître 45 y est également explicitée : il est montré comment la division en quatre niveaux ici présentée, qui s'inscrit dans une série de divisions quadripartites relevées dans les Rasā'il recèle en réalité une théorie des âges de l'homme comprenant sept niveaux sous l'influence des astres. This article offers an annotated translation of Risala 45 of the work known as Rasā'il Ikhwān al-Ṣafā'. This Risāla explores the notion of friendship as basis of the community of the Ikhwān al-S'afā', presents a typology of human relationships, and culminates in the description of the hierarchy of the Ikhwān. An introduction clarifies the various themes discussed in the Risāla, such as the majlis of the Ikhwān, the origin of characters, how to choose and keep a friend, friendship in education and society. These themes are situated in the literature on friendship flourishing in the 10th cent. The discussion on the quadripartite hierarchy mentioned at the end of Risāla 45 shows how this provides a key for the reading of the Rasāil, and
