Notes on the Myology of the Pelvic Limb in Kiwi (Apteryx) and in Other Birds

Anatomical variants of the musculature of the pelvic limb in Apteryx, based on a review of the published literature, are considered from the aspect of (1) errors in descriptive myology, (2) probable misidentification or misrepresentation of muscles, and (3) variations in a given muscle set that have not been thoroughly examined in terms of a form-function complex. A more accurate interpretation of these relationships is suggested as a basis for further studies of the pelvic limb myology in birds.
