Zusammenfassung: | Enrico Terrinoni uses his experience of cultural displacement and the "slipping" of modernist and postmodernist texts, most notably his experience of translating Joyce's "Finnegans Wake," to elaborate on the ways in which texts deemed "untranslatable" are actually translatable in literal, mechanical ways, but often lose some ephemeral cultural sensibility that cannot be perfectly depicted in translation, due to the figurative and culturally-dependent nature of language. He discusses the difficulties of translating "true to the word" while still capturing those senses and impressions and connotations and permutations of meaning that, while not transliteration, are "true to the text"--or to the interplay of text and the social context in which it was first created.
