Introduction: Introducing Máirtín Ó Cadhain

This essay provides an introduction to the fiction of Máirtín Ó Cadhain, tracing its development from the naïve anecdotal style of his first collection of stories through the dramatic changes that took place in his narrative technique while he was imprisoned during the second world war and again in the later work developed in the 1950s and 60s while he was working as a lecturer at Trinity College Dublin. The essay argues that Ó Cadhain's psychological insight into both the rural and urban characters that inhabit his fictional world provides its own unique perception of aspects of the human condition and of defining elements of the Irish experience in the twentieth century. /// Cette dissertation se veut une introduction à la fiction de Máirtín Ó Cadhain. Elle retrace son évolution, du style anecdotique naïf de son premier recueil d'histoires, à ses ouvrages les plus récents dans les années 50 et 60 lorsqu'il était maître de conférence à Trinity College à Dublin, sans oublier les changements dramatiques de sa technique narrative lors de son emprisonnement pendant la seconde guerre mondiale. Cette dissertation prend pour hypothèse qu' Ó Cadhain offre un aperçu psychologique de personnages ruraux et urbains peuplant un monde fictif, tout en y apportant une perception personnelle unique des aspects de la condition humaine et des éléments définissant l'expérience irlandaise au vingtième siècle.
