Coagulation/flocculation of beet sugar wastewater

The coagulation/flocculation of wastewater from a beet-sugar mill was studied, with special attention paid to the dose and type of coagulant aids, and to the amount of sludge produced. The strength of the sludge floc was examined simply to design a transportation pipe. The experiments were carried out on batch scale and also in continuous-flow laboratory and pilot-plant experiments. Batch experiments in rectangular vessels described the continuous coagulation/flocculation process quite well. The settling velocity of the sludge was determined in a vertical settling cylinder-a simple technique that proved successful in designing the sedimentation tank. Economic aspects were briefly surveyed.
