Zusammenfassung:A study of the adaptation of wastewater bacteria to a substrate of phthalic acid ester, diethyl phthalate, established that the utilization of the toxic compound by the wastewater organisms is attributable to the enrichment of pre-existing spontaneous mutants. The possibility that inducible enzyme formation is responsible for the acclimation process was rejected.
