Zusammenfassung: | Little known are the ties between the great neo-Hasidic Jewish theologian, Abraham Heschel, and Henry Corbin, one of the major religious philosophers and Orientalists of 20th century France. Their encounter took place in pre-World War II Germany, when both were young doctoral students. Though their grandiose project of an anthology of Jewish and Muslim mystical texts was thwarted by the outbreak of war, their relationship nonetheless continued through the '5O's as each struggled with the problems posed to spirituality by modern Western society. Corbin even incorporated into his analysis of the theosophic system of the great 13th century Muslim mystic ibn Arabi, acclaimed as on of the outstanding theological essays of the century, Heschel's categories of theopathy and unio sympathica. |
