The Munich Olympic Games and designing a new image for Germany / המשחקים האולימפיים במינכן ועיצוב תדמיתה החדשה של גרמניה

מלחמת העולם השנייה ומאורעות השואה הטילו צל כבד על גרמניה המערבית. חזרתה ל"משפחת העמים" הייתה כרוכה בזיכרון של פשעי הנאצים. המשחקים האולימפיים במינכן היוו הזדמנות להציג בפני העולם את "גרמניה החדשה". היה ברור לכול כי צלם של המשחקים האולימפיים בברלין ילווה את המשחקים האולימפיים במינכן בכל שלביהם. במאמר זה יתוארו ניסיונותיה של גרמניה להשכיח מהתודעה הציבורית את ברלין 1936 ולעצב מחדש את תדמיתה של גרמניה כאומה קוסמופוליטית שוחרת שלום. עיצובה של התדמית הגרמנית החדשה כלל תכנון ארכיטקטוני חדשני של המכלול האולימפי, הצנעת דמויות עבר בולטות שנקשרו במשטר הנאצי, עיצוב חזותי של המשחקים ברוח קוסמופוליטית וטקס פתיחה נטול פאתוס לאומי. יותר מכול בלטה היעדרותם של אנשי ביטחון חמושים בכפר האולימפי בשל החשש מהאסוציאציה שעלולה לעורר חזותו של חייל גרמני נושא נשק. אולם המציאות טפחה על פני הגרמנים. התדמית החדשה לא הצליחה להסתיר את המחלוקות הפוליטיות שהתעוררו במהלך המשחקים. האירוע היה רצוף שערוריות בעלות גוון פוליטי וטבח של ספורטאים ישראלים על ידי ארגון טרור. המשחקים ייזכרו לעד בשל הטבח ושאר השערוריות שאירעו במהלכם. אלה הזכירו לעולם את האווירה שליוותה את משחקי ברלין, אווירה שהגרמנים ניסו להשכיח בכל מאודם. The Second World War and the Holocaust events cast a heavy shadow over West Germany. Its return to the "Family of Nations" involved the memory of Nazi crimes. The Munich Olympic Games were an opportunity to present to the world the "New Germany". It was clear to everyone that the shadow of the Berlin Olympic Games would follow the Munich Olympic Games at every stage. This article deals with Germany's attempts to erase Berlin 1936 from the public consciousness and to redesign Germany's image as a cosmopolitan, peace-seeking nation. Designing the new German image included innovative architectural design of the Olympic complex, concealing the prominent landmarks associated with the Nazi regime, the visual design of the games in a cosmopolitan spirit and an opening ceremony without national pathos. Most notably absent were the armed security personnel at the Olympic village, due to the fear of associations that might be evoked by armed German soldiers. However, reality struck the Germans in the face. The "new image" did not succeed in hiding the political disputes that arose during the Games. The event was fraught with scandals with political overtones, in addition to the massacre of the Israeli sportsmen by a terrorist organization.
