TO THE DEPTHS AND UP—BRISBANE, EARLY 1943

A black and white photograph is the sole occupant of one wall of the Queensland Maritime Museum CEO's office. It depicts a stirring scene. Under a turbulent sky a submarine slices through a choppy sea, the Stars and Stripes streaming from its conning tower. On its bow is the outline of a bounding kangaroo. The text below reads: 'USN Submarine Growler. Reproduced from a painting and presented by Capt. W.M. Downes USN, to Evans Deakin and Co. Limited, in appreciation of their work in prefabricating and fitting a new bow as the result of damage sustained in action in World War II'.
