Zusammenfassung:In the last three decades there has been a renaissance in contemporary biblical research regarding ethical and moral issues. In this article we attempt to review and evaluate the main areas of this revival. The article consists of three sections: A) A short preface in which we trace the main reasons for the new interest in and occupation with biblical ethics. B) Six drastic developments in bible study that have taken place since the eighties of the twentieth century. Namely — (1) A shift in the academic position on the subject. (2) A change in the language and scope of publications. (3) A change in biblical material. (4) A change in the attitude towards the homogenity of biblical ethics. (5) A change in the scope and intensity of the critique of biblical ethics. (6) A change in the spectrum of the issues in question. C) A section devoted to a critique and assessment of various approaches and methods. Among the issues addressed are — Is ethics a separate category in the Hebrew Bible? The concept of free will in the Hebrew Bible and its implications respecting the study of ethics; The connection between the study of biblical ethics and contemporary moral philosophy; The methodological problems of the evolutionary approach; The methodological problems of the paradigmatic approach; The story as a source of morality; Is there a universal aspect of ethics and morality in the Hebrew Bible? Moral dilemmas in the Bible; The problematic nature of the relevancy of biblical ethics.
