Issues related to the evaluation of assistive devices by the elderly: The "Hi-Riser Chair" and the "Stair-Walker" / סוגיות בהערכת אבזרי עזר בידי קשישים – מחקר "כיסא רם" ו"הליכון מדרגות"

The prevailing technological environment does not take sufficient account of the needs of the elderly or disabled. Commonly used items such as automated teller machines and remote control devices, for example, are still not "user-friendly" for persons with such functional limitations as vision impairment or loss of fine motor control. Technology can compensate for these deficiencies in two respects: 1) by designing an environment to meet the needs of users with different functional levels; and 2) by designing special assistive devices for consumers with functional limitations. It is important to examine consumers' needs and utilization patterns in regard to new or existing assistive devices. This article discusses two devices, the development and evaluation of which were conducted by the JDC – Brookdale Institute. These devices include a "hi-riser chair" (which provides assistance in getting up and sitting down, at the touch of a button) and a "stair-walker" (which provides assistance in going up and down stairs). The article examines methodological issues related to the evaluation by elderly persons of assistive devices still in the developmental stage. It also considers their contribution to the product's design process, adaptation to user needs, instructions for use and marketing strategy.
