Zusammenfassung:For centuries, St. Peter's abbey church in Ghent has fascinated historians: it is an exquisite example of early Baroque architecture of the southern Netherlands. New insights about the significance of the abbey church's design can be gathered by investigating strategies that were operational during the building campaign. Such strategies can be inferred from two items that relate to the laying of the abbey's first stone in 1629: a commemorative medal and a descriptive poem. Together, they provide new information on the contemporary architectural meaning of the church, the poem mirroring the building's symbolic foundation. (Quotes from original text)
