Zusammenfassung:At the end of XVIII century over 27% of the population of Southern Italy lived in the mountain regions and a similar part (26.5%) in the inner hills. The plains and the coastal hills, dominated from the swamp and still subject episodically to the pirates raids, collected respective less of 19% and little more of 27% of the southern population. Two centuries later, at the beginning of the last decade of the 1900's, during which the population of Southern Italy, in spite of great migratory waves, nearly tripled, the territorial distribution of the population radically changed. The settled population in the mountain regions in fact has reduced hardly to 12% of the total southern population and little more of 19% that one of the inner hill, while it is increased to approximately 31% the settlement rate in the coastal hill areas and 37% and over that one thickened in the limited plain areas. This essay reconstructs this long process of radical transformation of the territorial distribution of the population of Southern Italy and in particular of the Appennines area, analyzing, with depth and wealth of analysis, times and modalities of development and accompanying the analysis of the demographic variations of the mountain regions with the relative economic dynamics and the change of the environmental conditions.
