Zusammenfassung:Attention is drawn to a letter of G. C. Lichtenberg (of July 1th, 1776) which refers to a paper on the physical meaning of stellar colours. The available evidence points toward the authorship of M. Hell, then director of the Vienna Observatory. Presumably he explained the colours of stars in the same way as the colours of auroras, namely by the optically different nature of particles in their atmospheres.
