Zusammenfassung:In America during the 19th century the „Naval Hospitals“ of the U. S. Navy may be regarded as the best institutions ever opened for patients at this time. After the beginnings at about 1800 most of the big hospitals have been erected between 1825 and 1840 by the leading architects like Haviland and Strickland together with the best Navy Surgeons. The „Marine Hospitals“ of the merchant service, the large „State Lunatic Asylums“ and some of the important hospitals in growing towns developped from this naval prototype.
