Zusammenfassung: | Many foreign companies opened operations in Nazi Germany and profited from its war economy, most of them in the construction trades. While details on the role of Swiss and US-American companies surfaced during the debate on forced and slave labor restitution, little is known about the far larger involvement of companies from countries that were under German occupation. This article analyses the operations of more than 180 Danish building contractors in Germany 1940-45. It documents a conflict between the Danish government and the building trade about the extent of collaboration, describes the major role played by Danish companies in recruiting voluntary labor to Nazi Germany, and gives examples of the harsh treatment some workers received on Danish worksites in the "Third Reich". |
