This book was written twenty-two years ago. It has thus reached a respectable age — one by which many of its contemporaries have already vanished from the scene. Had it been a product of the “good old days” (which, whatever century we ascribe them to, were in all likelihood held by those who actually lived in them to be the most terrible and most dangerous of times), it would have been easy, with the help of a little make-up, to restore a certain youthfulness to it.
