Zusammenfassung:Rapidly fading Mesoamerican beliefs in the sacred nature of cycads as ancestors and protectors of maize are found from the Northeast Mesoamerican periphery in the Huasteca region of San Luis Potosí state all the way to the Southeast Mesoamerican periphery in northeastern Honduras (Figures 8.1 and 8.2). Intensive field research undertaken in Honduras and northeastern Mexico has revealed a rich panoply of beliefs and suggested numerous avenues for explanation of the origins and significance of the SMA (sacred-maize-ancestor) concept (Bonta et al. 2019).
