Born in Indiana of German ancestry, he was heir to the family agricultural business and invented something called the Rumely Oil Pull Farm Tractor. Despite the fact that he was superbly educated (Notre Dame, Oxford, Heidelberg, and Freiburg), he was an incompetent businessman and lost the family firm while still a young man. Undeterred, Rumely concentrated on an unusual institution, the Interlaken School, which combined education with physical exertion. He also had strange notions about diet, medicine, and economic matters.
