Zusammenfassung:This message from Japan’s Army Minister Itagaki Seishirō was distributed to Japanese soldiers in the China theater in an April 29, 1940, pamphlet that explained that their mission was “to overthrow the régime that is resisting Japan,” and set forth the proper behavior for imperial subjects while in China.¹ In the midst of the Sino-Japanese War of 1937–45, a war of annihilation against Chiang Kaishek’s Republic of China (ROC), this message of friendship and pluralist respect may seem ironic or incongruous. Nevertheless, this policy was consistent with the way Japan legitimated the war as a struggle for Asian liberation.
