Sporadic attempts to establish a cooperative institution are documented in the Brazilian states of São Paulo, Minas Gerais, and Rio Grande do Sul, the latter being the site of the first German-inspired credit cooperative, brought to Brazil in 1902 by the Swiss cleric Padre Theodor Amstad and founded under the name Pioneira (Mladenatz 2003).
