Marble Finds from the Church

The marble finds from the church and its environs on the eastern hill of Mt. Berenice, particularly the imported marble furnishings, attest to the opulence of the church’s interior. The marble elements from thebemaornamentation include fragments of chancel screen slabs, posts, furnishings and liturgical implements such as tables, altar tables and legs, a reliquarium, bowls, and basins. Fragments of architectural ornamentation were also found, including,inter alia, capitals and cornices of various sizes. It should be noted that most of the remains of the church furnishings were made of marble, with only a small number of finds produced
