To this end, we developed a heuristic set of ideal types.Red deterrenceis an ideal type that fits many elements of China’s view of the role of norms and the role of deterrence in ensuring that others abide by these norms.Blue deterrenceis an ideal type that fits many elements of the U.S. view of the role of norms and the role of deterrence in ensuring that others abide by these norms. Although we take examples from
