Deforestation and Jewish Settlement in Fazenda Quatro Irmãos: A History of the Jewish Colonization Association’s Activities in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil

Two agents of colonization were involved in the settlement of European immigrants and/or their descendants as farmers in the state of Rio Grande do Sul: the state government and private immigration and colonization companies. The intense campaign and the implementation of an immigration and colonization policy initiated by the Imperial government, and later by the Republican government, directed toward the arrival of European immigrants, must be understood in the context of the replacement of slave labor for the work of immigrants, especially in coffee plantations in southeastern Brazil, and in the formation of small food-producing properties, based on family work
