The intense campaign and the implementation of an immigration and colonization policy initiated by the Imperial government, and later by the Republican government, directed toward the arrival of European immigrants, must be understood in the context of the replacement of slave labor for the work of immigrants, especially in coffee plantations in southeastern Brazil, and in the formation of small food-producing properties, based on family work |
